Parts to finish your Chefur Custom Krink kit

Posted by Chefur on Dec 4th 2023

Looking at buying one of my  reproduction AKS-74u kits?
Here's a few different routes you can take for completing the kit!

First off, the basic parts that are not caliber specific:

Total for the cheapest route: $303.99

5.45x39

Receivers:

The AKS-74u receivers offered by Childers, Recreator, and AK-Builder all fit my kits.

These range from $94.99 to $150+.

Route 1: Surplus Components
This is my preferred method for 5.45x39.

  • Bulgarian AK-74 front trunnion and bullet guide: These are getting harder to find. They can be had for about $250 on Gunbroker and AK Files.
  • Bulgarian AK-74 bolt / Polish Tantal bolt: These are fairly common and run about $240.
  • East German AK-74 bolt carrier: For whatever reason, the EG carriers are the most common. This seller has a lot of them and they're in NOS condition. - $145

Please note that the while the Polish Tantal is mostly AK-74 derived, it is not fully compatible.

  1. Bolt: The firing pin retainer pin is proprietary on the Tantal. Otherwise they are the same as AK-74.
  2. Carrier: They have a flat surface where the carrier strikes the front trunnion and are not compatible with AK-74 front trunnions, which have an angled surface. They will chisel into each other.
Tantal trunnions and carriers are both compatible with my parts kit, but must be used with each other.

This route uses the 22mm barrel option and AK-74 gas piston option.

Total for surplus components: $645

Route 2: WBP 5.45x39 Bolt, Carrier, and Trunnion

WBP Bolts, carriers, and front trunnions are all proprietary. If you use any one of them, you have to use all 3.
Please see here for my notes on building them, as they are strange.

This route uses the 23mm barrel option and AKM gas piston option.

Total for WBP: $259.97

Cheapest option for 5.45: WBP BCG and trunnion, AK-Builder 80% receiver, cheapest route of the basic parts at the top: $658.95 total

5.56

Barrels:

At the time of writing (December 2023), I have ordered both 22mm and 23mm barrels to offer alongside my kits. They are estimated to be available the second week of January.

If you need something right now, there are only two barrel options.

  1. Arsenal SLR106 barrels. These have a 23mm barrel journal and will work with WBP 5.56 kits or the Galil-AKM hybrid.
However, the hinge block journal diameter is a thicker spec for milled receiver profile components. This diameter can be turned down easily by a competent gunsmith or machinist.
  2. Obstreperous / Luckypen: These are standard AKS-74U spec and will work with my kits.
He offers them in 22mm and 22mm oversized. To use them with a 23mm trunnion, such as a WBP 5.56 or Galil-AKM hybrid, you will need a competent gunsmith to sleeve it for you.

Route 1: WBP 5.56 Bolt, Carrier, and Trunnion

WBP Bolts, carriers, and front trunnions are all proprietary. If you use any one of them, you have to use all 3.
Please see here for my notes on building them, as they are strange.

These use AK-74 pattern magazines, such as  WBPFB RadomCircle 10s, or surplus 5.45 magazines with a Pod Arms conversion follower.

This route uses a 23mm barrel (not yet available for 5.56, on order) and AKM gas piston option.

Total for WBP: $259.97

Route 2: Galil-AKM Hybrid

This route is perfect for those that already have a beater AKM kit to cannibalize, or if you just want to run Galil mags. I have completed one of these now, and I'm starting on a second.

  • AKM front trunnion. Anything AKM spec will work here. The new production WBP 7.62x39 ones are very consistent and work well. - $89.99
  • Galil bullet guide. Hillbilly Firearms has them - $46
  • Galil bolt. These are all over the place secondhand. They can be had for as little as $50. The average cost is around $70.
  • AKM bolt carrier. Any AKM spec carrier will work. The new production WBP AKM carriers have some QC issues. Average price for these is $90

For the receiver, any 7.62x39 spec receiver will also work here as the Galil magazine uses an AKM spec magwell, despite being 5.56. Childers, Recreator, WBP, and AK-Builder receivers all use untrimmed ejectors that are long enough to be used for 5.56.

This route uses a 23mm barrel (not yet available for 5.56, on order) and AKM gas piston option.

Total for Galil-AKM Hybrid: $295

Route 3: Surplus and FB Radom

This route is one I have experimented with multiple times and had good success.

These also use AK-74 pattern magazines, such as  WBPFB RadomCircle 10s, or surplus 5.45 magazines with a Pod Arms conversion follower.

  • Bulgarian AK-74 front trunnion and bullet guide: These are getting harder to find. They can be had for about $250 on Gunbroker and AK Files.
  • FB Radom 5.56 bolt. These are AK-74 spec, but with a slightly deeper bolt face. You will need to trim either the chamber face of the barrel or bolt face, depending on what barrel you use. - $179
Please note the firing pins are proprietary. I would recommend  picking up a spare if you go this route.
  • East German AK-74 bolt carrier: For whatever reason, the EG carriers are the most common. This seller has a lot of them and they're in NOS condition. - $145

This route uses a 22mm barrel (not yet available for 5.56, on order) and AK-74 gas piston option.

Total for Surplus/FB mashup: $574
