Galil AKM 5.56 Hybrid builds

In today's AK building scene, 5.56 Kalashnikovs are more popular than ever. While certainly not an invention of mine, the practice of making a 5.56 AK by using a Galil bolt and bullet guide, in an otherwise 7.62x39 kit, is becoming more and more common and is something I have tinkered with quite extensively.
I wanted to publish my notes on it in hopes that it may help expedite the build process for others.

1) The bolt
Early pattern Galil bolts have a free floating firing pin which can occasionally cause slam fires. I have had this personally happen to me, which was unpleasant.
I highly recommend finding a bolt from a model with a spring loaded firing pin.

2) The bolt carrier
The Galil has a bolt carrier descended from the Type 2 AK, and the area on the bottom that interacts with the magazine is no exception. The AKM bolt carrier is a bit different, more squared off. Using an AKM profile carrier can cause magazine issues, particularly high friction and denting of rounds in the magazine.
Below is a Type 3 carrier on the left, AKM on the right.

Thankfully, the Type 2, Type 3 and Yugoslavian AKs have the same contour in this area. I have had good success with Yugo, Chinese, and Bulgarian bolt carriers.

3) The magazines
The magazines are AKM spec, and the receiver does not need any modifications to accomodate the Galil magazine.
If you choose to use modern production Galil ACE magazines, the trunnion will need machining.

4) The ejector
The 7.62x39 ejector is too short for use on 5.56 and will need to be welded and recut.
Thankfully, most virgin receivers have ejectors just barely long enough to work.

5) The bullet guide
You will need to use a bullet guide from a Galil, which notably uses a different rivet size than the AKM. You will need to ream the 4mm hole in the Galil bullet guide open to match the trunnion of choice.

6) The barrel. Below is a drawing of the barrel profile we have developed and used. Please note that all deviations from the AKM are intentional and necessary for function with the Galil components and 5.56.
You are free to use this drawing as you wish.
